  • Meet The Staff: Dave Skutnik
    Dave Skutnik
Dave SkutnikDave Skutnik is the weekend evening meteorologist and has been with WBRE since the Spring of 2005. He also spent the fall and winter of 2007-2008 getting your day started on Pennsylvania Morning on WBRE. Dave came to us from our sister station WHAG in Hagerstown, Maryland.

And it seems wherever Dave goes, storms seem to follow. In his time here at WBRE he forecasted and covered the aftermath of the devastating flooding that struck in June 2006 and again in November 2006.  Then in February 2007 the Valentine's Day Storm delivered the region's biggest snowfall since 2002, leaving the interstates shut down for days.  Dave reported for days out in the storm as part of WBRE's  storm coverage.  During a snowstorm in March Dave also appeared live on The Weather Channel from Honesdale, Wayne County.

The skies were just as stormy over Hagerstown when Dave was there, including the President’s Day Blizzard of 2003 (25” of snow), Hurricane Isabel in September 2003 and Hurricanes Frances, Ivan and Jeanne in September 2004. Hurricane Ivan brought 18 tornadoes to the WHAG viewing area that evening, and it was Dave that led more than 4 hours continuous coverage of the storms, earning the station an Associated Press award.

Before working in Hagerstown, Dave was the Chief Meteorologist in Zanesville, Ohio. He was the station’s first-ever Meteorologist and helped build their first weather center.  He graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in Meteorology in 2001 and is one of four Penn State meteorologists at WBRE.

Born in New Jersey where he lived until 1986, Dave and his family moved to Orwigsburg in Schuylkill County. There he attended Blue Mountain Elementary and Middle Schools.  Dave and family returned to South Jersey for the 1990s, where he grew up an avid (and long suffering) Philadelphia sports fan - in particular of the Philadelphia Eagles and Flyers.

His favorite sport is ice hockey, and Dave is a big part of the local ice hockey community. He is a Level 3 referee for USA Hockey, the second highest level an official can attain. When he's not at work tracking the weather, he can usually be found refereeing area youth, high school, college and adult hockey games.

But enough about sports because Dave's big passion is for weather - winter weather in particular. That's right, he's a snow lover, and as a matter of fact, the Blizzard of '96 is what got Dave into weather in the first place. After nearly 3 feet of snow in that storm, and loving every last inch of it, he made the big decision that he wanted to be a Meteorologist.

If you’d like to email Dave you can do so by sending it to dskutnik@pahomepage.com.
