Meet The Staff: Andy Mehalshick
Andy Mehalshick
Andy Mehalshick is the weeknight co-anchor for WBRE News at 5, 5:30, & 6 bringing you the big stories that affect you, often live out in the field.
He began his
career in 1979 with a scholarship at Wilkes University where he operated the
school radio station and college newspaper. While at Wilkes, he began working at
Hazleton Area radio stations WQEQ/WXPX. He also reported for area newspapers.
For much of his reporting career, Andy covered the police and crime beats. In
that role he did stories that had far-reaching impact. One story resulted in the
reopening of a death investigation. Another helped authorities track down a man
who faked his own death.
Many television journalists build a career by moving
from market to market, but Andy has no desire to do that. “This is my home. I’m
proud to tell people I’m from Northeastern Pennsylvania and I’m thrilled that
I’m being given the opportunity to provide my neighbors with an incredibly
powerful tool: information,” he says.
The stories that Andy has found most fulfilling
have been those dealing with children. His “Stranger Danger” series is dedicated to helping parents keep their children safe. Andy has been leading the I-Team's investigation into Internet Predators. So far 5 have been arrested, and those investigations were featured on CNBC on 'The Big Idea' with Donnie Deutsch as well as WBRE News.
A
Wilkes University graduate, Andy first joined WBRE-TV in 1985. He has won
numerous journalism awards and has frequently appeared on national newscasts,
including MSNBC, NBC, and CNN. Andy’s reporting has been recognized by the
Associated Press, the Pennsylvania Chief’s of Police Association, and the
Pennsylvania State Attorney General.
Andy was the lead reporter when WBRE-TV won
an Emmy for best newscast. He is also involved in the community helping raise
money with the American Cancer Society, Helping Hands, and Make-A-Wish
Telethons. Andy is proud to serve on numerous community boards and supports
other agencies including the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Big Brothers
Big Sisters, and the Volunteer Center of Greater Hazleton.
He and his wife,
Mary, and their daughter, Jacqueline, continue to live in the Hazleton Area.
