Williamsport, Lycoming County-As Sheridan Elementary School prepares for its 100th-year celebration coming up on May 18, perhaps one of the most special pieces of the event will be a raffled student-made quilt and a Sheridan-themed T-shirt sale to fund-raise for the school's Orville W. Mitstifer Award.
Mitstifer taught at Sheridan from 1923 to 1954. He died in 1956.
The award is given each year to graduating male and female students, who attended Sheridan, with the highest GPA and have been accepted to college.
The items are aimed to bring in money to help supplement the award fund so that Sheridan students, through the Class of 2025 (current kindergarteners), can continue receiving it.
Along with T-shirt sales, raffle tickets will be sold for a quilt created by the 2004-05 Reading Club.
The 4-foot by 6-foot quilt bears not only the work of the club's students but also author signatures and artwork, including those from high-profile names such as Bill Cosby, Robert Munsch and Jan Brett.
"The students sent authors a square fabric patch for them to sign or draw on for the quilt," said Sheridan teacher Julie Bittner.
Raffle tickets for the quilt ($1 a piece or $5 for six chances) are available at Otto's; Gustonian Gifts; GG2; Vision Salon; and at the school, 915 Sheridan St. The drawing for the quilt will be at 4:30 p.m. the day of the event.
