Shamokin,
Northumberland County - It's called the Coal Drop. Suspended high above
downtown Shamokin is huge lump of coal, or something that looks like a lump of
coal. Every year hundreds gather in
downtown Shamokin and enjoy music, good food and good times with friends who
want to celebrate the New Year. Just like
what you see in Times Square, when midnight approaches, members of the fire
company lower the coal behind a stage and lights come on to tell everyone the
new year has arrived. Today workers were
preparing the site, shoveling snow, checking the lights, and making sure
everything is ready for the big moment. The
Mayor believes this ten year tradition is the best way to honor the coal
region's past as they celebrate the future.
