Hazleton, Luzerne County -- The American Cancer Society needs 500,000 people to take part in a national study called "CPS-3" -- and it chose the Greater Hazleton Relay for Life as an enrollment site.

"This year, our site has been chosen as the only one in NEPA as an enrollment site in a national study," said Amy Herbener, co-chair of the local enrollment for the CPS-3 study.  "We have a chance to be a part of history, for something that's going to go for generations. This is going to go over the next 20 to 30 years."

This is the third nationwide study of its kind.  CPS-1 in the 1950s linked smoking and lung cancer.  Then in the 1970s and '80s, CPS-2 made the correlation between nutrition and lifestyle and colon and breast cancers. Now, it's time for CPS-3.  It will study genetics, environment, lifestyle, and other factors.  The American Cancer Society hopes to find prevention measures and even cures, but its members need your help.

Participants must be able to attend the Greater Hazleton Relay for Life on Saturday, June 4th for 30 minutes anytime between 10am and 2pm at 700 N. Popular Street in Hazleton.  People must between the ages of 30 and 65.  They can either have no history of cancer, or skin cancer only.  Participants will receive a survey in the mail every other year over 20 to 30 years.
