Drip Diverter

If you have a stain or a damp place on your ceiling, it probably means you have a leak in your attic. Here's a quick tip for a temporary fix until you can get up on your roof and have it patched permanently.

Water will generally seep through your plywood sheathing and run along the bottom edge of your rafter. If you take a small wood block and nail it to the bottom edge of your rafter. Then just turn it at a slight angle and set a bucket underneath it. You don't have to nail the block all the way in. You might have to move it. This will divert the water from the rafter into the bucket. If you have additional leaks, you can take a second block and nail it farther down on the rafter so that it catches anything the first block may miss. When the rain stops, the bucket will help you locate where the leak was coming from.
