Snow Slows Friday Night Commute

By: Brittany Sweeney
Updated: February 1, 2013
Snow squalls turned Friday evening's commute into a slow trek home for people all over northeastern and central Pennsylvania. There were wrecks from Lackawanna to Carbon Counties.

Daniel Baldwin, of Berlin, NJ, says "traffic is absolutely horrible."  Some call it a flash storm, others a snow squall, call it what you might it was definitely a headache for commuters.  Baldwin says "I checked the weather and I checked the weather even now and it says no snow, but I guess weather is unpredictable.  You never know what you are going to get."

In Carbon County more then 20 cars slammed into each other here on Interstate 80 Eastbound between the Lake Harmony and Blakeslee exits  shutting down the road for more than 2 hours and turning it into a parking lot.  Ken Huber, of Akron, OH, says "we may have to walk over to the Comfort Inn over there and get a room for the night until we can get started back in the morning." The weather is to blame for that accident that happened just after 4 p.m. and although quite a few tractor trailers were involved the Pennsylvania State Police say only minor injuries were reporter.

Carbon County was not the only section of NEPA with slick roads.  "Coming out of Jack Frost it's just maybe a mile road and there was about 5 accidents within that road and it was ridiculous," says Baldwin.

In Lackawanna County icy conditions caused two more crashes in Scranton.  The first on the North Scranton Expressway near the Keyser Avenue exit.  The other on Linden Street, outside the Federal Courthouse.

Anyone eager to get home for the weekend was only getting there one way Friday night.  "Slow and steady and take my time and that is the best way the best thing I can do," Baldwin says.
