Updated: January 23, 2013
Harrisburg, Dauphin County-In recognition of American Heart Month, state Rep. Frank Farina, D-Lackawanna/Wayne, will host free blood pressure screenings from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 and 13 in his constituent service office, 423 Main St., Eynon.

The Lackawanna Ambulance Inc. will partner with Farina and provide trained paramedics to handle the screenings.

"Blood pressure screening is a quick and easy way to monitor cardiac health," Farina said. "Elevated blood pressure can lead to many different medical problems in addition to heart attacks and strokes. Fortunately, it is easy to check blood pressure, and usually easy to treat if it is caught early."

February is recognized as National Heart Month.

According the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, as well as a major cause of disabilities.

The CDC reports a number of risk factors can lead to heart disease, including: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, diet, lack of exercise, and tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

The Lackawanna Ambulance Inc. has provided emergency medical service and transportation in the Scranton region since 1998.
