On Sunday, November 4 the annual "A Mile in Her Shoes" walk will be held on Public Square in Downtown Wilkes-Barre. The event raises awareness and funds for "Ruth's Place'.
Ruth's Place's is marking the start of its 10th year of operation and has provided over 30,000 nights lodging to homeless women in Wilkes-Barre.
Ruth's Place is dedicated to providing shelter and case management services for women experiencing homelessness while honoring the dignity of each guest. Using evidence-based practices, the program provides safe, temporary and short-term emergency shelter for women experiencing homelessness in Luzerne County; coordinates and collaborates with other service providers and volunteers to assure the provision of services that address their basic physical, financial, health and spiritual needs; and assists sheltered guests to form and follow a permanent housing plan to quickly achieve stable, long term housing.
Ruth's Place is a faith-based program founded by the Methodist Urban Ministry in 2003. It has been operated by Ruth's Place: House of Hope, Inc. since 2008.
"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" Walk-A-Thon will be held November 4th, from 1-3pm. The walk will start in the Wilkes-Barre Public Square. The proceeds from last year's walk-a-thon provided the means for safe shelter for 276 women
