Williamsport, Lycoming County-

A horticulture student at Pennsylvania College of Technology was awarded a scholarship at a recent meeting of the Williamsport Garden Club.

"This award made me feel like my hard work at Penn College was recognized," said Kaila A. Sewald, of DuBoistown, who is scheduled to graduate in May with an associate degree in landscape technology/horticulture: plant production emphasis. "As I listened to the presenters at their program for the evening, it made me realize that I will never stop learning about the 'green' industry. (It) continued to broaden my thinking about my career area and energized me to begin the steps necessary to launch my career."

The club awards scholarships to students enrolled full time, with preference given to high school graduates in northcentral Pennsylvania.

"It was my pleasure to introduce Kaila at the Williamsport Garden Club," said Christine A. Fink, a part-time member of the horticulture faculty who is certified by the prestigious American Institute of Floral Designers. "Kaila is energetic, hardworking and a goal-driven student who discovered her passion while at Penn College. She has found a niche in floral design, with a long-term goal of establishing her own floral shop."

Scholarship recipient Kaila A. Sewald, left, with Christine A. Fink, a part-time member of Pennsylvania College of Technology's horticulture faculty.
