East Stroudsburg, Monroe County - The Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation recently announced that Pocono Medical Center (PMC) has been re-accredited as a Level III Trauma Center, thereby meeting their strict requirements for quality, patient outcomes, and education. The re-accreditation was granted based on a rigorous site survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation. PMC's Trauma Center is dedicated to providing world-class trauma care to every patient, every day. Throughout the Commonwealth, there are 30 accredited trauma centers and currently PMC is the only Level III Trauma Center.
Dr. David Scaff, Medical Director of PMC's Trauma Center, commenting on the re-accreditation spoke to the tremendous team effort involving the Emergency Medical Services pre-hospital professionals and the PMC team, "Our Trauma Center has integrated and utilized all of our healthcare resources to care for the complex cases presented through traumatic injuries." He added, "The health system has demonstrated how our effective teamwork, dedication, and commitment to patient care and our community allows for us to continuously be prepared to treat the most serious life threatening and disabling injuries." PMC's Trauma Center is the only accredited program in Monroe County, serving more than 169,882 people.
The responsibilities of the program include the coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of the trauma patient to ensure compliance with all state and national standards. The Trauma team is on duty 24 hours a day providing emergency care to injured patients, which includes initial evaluation, resuscitation, surgical care, management in our Nursing Units, and preparation to return each patient to their previous daily life activities. Our team is led by trauma surgeons who coordinate care with other specialists including orthopedic surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons, and any other specialty surgeons and providers who may be needed to care for specific injuries. The PMC Trauma team also includes skilled professionals such as our EMS providers, nursing staff, along with many other integral departments throughout the entire health system.
PMC's Trauma Center began treating trauma patients on November 1, 2008, when it received its initial one-year accreditation. PMC's Trauma team cares for more than 1,100 trauma cases per year. To learn more about PMC's health care services, please visit http://www.PoconoHealthSystem.org. .
