Senior Citizens React to Social Security Increase

Senior Citizens at the Loder Senior Center in East Stroudsburg had a lot to say about it. Eno Antilla is 90-years-old. He has seen all sorts of economic booms and busts. He said, "You have to make do with what you've got." So he is just fine with the 1.7% increase. He noted, "Every little bit helps."

The increase will average out to about $21 a month. Gary W. Smith said he appreciates it. He added, "Better than nothing."

In 2009 and 2010 there were no cost of living increases. Last year people on Social Security got a 3.6% increase. Gia Dileo of East Stroudsburg complained, "It is not enough. It doesn't keep up with inflation at all." She is on Social Security Disability. She said, "The prices at the supermarket are incredible. I've cut back on everything, bare essentials." Dileo doesn't like the formula the government uses to calculate the increase. She said, "They haven't updated that formula in years and it doesn't show the true - the tune of what's going on right now."

Kate Koehler works for the Monroe County Aging Office. She said many seniors would like to see more money. She added, "Most people would like more there's very few people that make enough that they don't have to really scrim or try and supplement it in some way."

Many people are concerned because the price of Medicare is expected to rise next year. That could cut into the Social Security increase.
